Now would be a great time to resign in protest.
What they just did, which was, let me remind you, posting screencaps of a woman’s rape that was uploaded to youtube, that goes so far beyond the pale of human decency….
I cannot believe they thought this was okay simply because they hid the identity of the woman.
There are survivors on that staff, or there were, last time I was at Jezebel. Any woman with her head screwed on straight can tell you that this shit is not okay.
Fuck them, fuck the Gawker network, and fuck the enablers.
“We have since added additional pixelation to all of the images, including those of the attackers. This post is ultimately about the existence of a video, thus the images ARE the story — without them, there’s nothing. To remove them would be, in effect, to un-report the story. Which is not going to happen.”
…What? No. Deleting the article and denying knowledge of it would be un-reporting the story. But to say you needed screencaps of a rape to legitimize an article about a woman being raped is to say that any news report without extensive pictures of the event while it is happening somehow does not count as reporting the news.
When you read an obituary in the newspaper, but there is no photo of the deceased, do you refuse to believe that the person is dead?
Just own up to the fact that your staff got lazy and thoughtless. You tried to churn up readership through shock value instead of handling this story with gravity. You have the uploader’s youtube name. You could have copied the video somewhere else to ensure they couldn’t delete it. You had PROOF, you jabronies. To disregard this poor woman’s dignity and privacy and smear her trauma all over the page was, in every regard, a terrible decision.
It’d be great if you just came out and said “sorry,” but I’m not really expecting you to be punished or anything. You just voided your own credibility. That’s enough.
Trigger warning: rape, sexual assault, general grossness of all humanity
How could anyone ever think this was okay? The article says, “We’re not going to take down the screencaps because the...
